Meet Kalra

Insurance from
someone on your block.

We’re an independent family brokerage in Jackson Heights. That means we shop the whole market for you instead of selling you the one policy we happen to own. Homes, cars, storefronts, health plans.

Six hours, one evening

The discount
the State hands you.

New York’s Point and Insurance Reduction Program gives you a 10% reduction on the liability and collision portions of your auto premium, held for 3 years. Your insurer doesn’t get to opt out of it. It also takes up to four points off your record.

Take it online, at your own pace, at your kitchen table. We’re an approved sponsor for New York and New Jersey.

Tap whatever’s true. A checklist builds itself as you go, marking what New York requires, what’s worth having, and where people in your situation usually have a hole.

Select everything that applies

Nothing is stored and nothing is sent anywhere. It’s a checklist, and it’s yours.

A checklist, not a quote and not a binder. Nothing here creates coverage. Limits, exclusions and price depend on carrier underwriting and the policy that gets issued.

What we cover

17 kinds of policy, one office.

For your home and car

The everyday policies, shopped across carriers so you're not paying loyalty tax to the company you signed with a decade ago.

  • Auto and car
  • Homeowner
  • Condo and co-op
  • Renters
  • Dwelling fire
  • Flood
  • Personal umbrella

For your business

Storefronts, contractors, trucks and crews. If a landlord or a general contractor has sent you a certificate request, bring it to us.

  • Business owner policy
  • General liability
  • Commercial property
  • Contractors liability
  • Workers compensation
  • NY disability
  • Commercial auto and umbrella

For your health

More plans exist than ever, and most of them look identical until someone reads the fine print out loud. That's the part we do.

  • Individual health plans
  • Small group health
  • Dental
Auto and car insurancePAP

Every New York registrant needs liability. The interesting part is everything after that: collision, comprehensive, uninsured motorist, and the discounts most people never get asked about.

We check for the accident prevention course credit, the good student discount, the homeowner discount, and credits for dual airbags, anti-lock brakes and daytime running lights.

Homeowner insuranceHO-3

Your house is probably the thing you could least afford to replace, which is why the policy deserves more than fifteen minutes of attention once a decade.

Two things worth reviewing every renewal: your hurricane deductible, which is a percentage rather than a flat number and surprises people, and the credits available for safety devices.

Condominium and co-opHO-6

The building's master policy stops somewhere, and where it stops is different in every association. Usually you're responsible for your floors, walls, cabinets and fixtures, plus your own liability.

Bring us the association's policy and your by-laws. We'll read them and tell you exactly where the seam is.

Renters insuranceHO-4

Your landlord's policy covers the building. It does not cover your clothes, your furniture, your laptop, or a guest who slips in your kitchen.

It's usually the cheapest policy anyone will ever sell you, and it can be extended for a home office or high-value items.

Dwelling fireDP-3

The policy for property you own but don't live in: a rental unit, a two-family where you occupy one floor, an inherited house between tenants.

A homeowners form covers everything except what it excludes. A dwelling fire form covers only the perils it names. We'll walk you through which ones you're actually buying.

Flood insuranceNFIP

No standard home or business policy covers flood. None of them. This is the most common gap we find, and it isn't limited to waterfront addresses.

A flood policy protects the building and its contents, satisfies lender requirements, and pays whether or not a federal disaster is ever declared. We place these through Wright Flood.

Personal umbrellaPUP

An extra layer of liability sitting above your auto and home policies, taking over when their limits run out. It also reaches into some gaps between policies where no coverage exists at all.

It covers you, your spouse and every family member in the household, anywhere in the world, and it pays legal defence costs.

Sanjay Kalra, insurance broker
Sanjay KalraJoined his father at the agency in 1991 and has been on this block ever since.

Forty years

One family, one block, one phone number.

Daya N. Kalra opened the agency in Sunnyside in 1986. His son Sanjay joined in 1991, the year the office moved to 74th Street in Jackson Heights. It hasn’t moved since.

In that time the block has changed almost entirely and the business has changed almost not at all. We still represent multiple carriers rather than one. We still explain the policy before we sell it. And the number is still the one printed on cards from the nineties.

Answers

The questions we actually get asked.

What does a broker do that a direct carrier doesn't?

A captive agent works for one company and can show you one price. We're independent, which means we represent multiple carriers and put your risk in front of several of them.

The difference shows up in two places. Price: the cheapest carrier for a 2019 Corolla in Jackson Heights isn't the cheapest carrier for a two-family in Woodside, and we can move you. And placement: when one carrier declines or non-renews you, we don't have to say sorry. We go to the next one.

I drive for Uber. Does my personal auto policy cover me?

Almost certainly not, and this is the most expensive misunderstanding in western Queens.

Standard personal auto policies contain a livery or for-hire exclusion. If you’re carrying a passenger for money and something happens, the claim can be denied and the policy cancelled afterwards. Platform coverage exists but it applies in phases, and there are gaps between them.

If you drive for hire in any form, rideshare, delivery, black car or livery, call us. We'll tell you plainly what your current policy does and doesn't do. It takes ten minutes and costs nothing.

My landlord wants a certificate of insurance by Friday. How fast can that happen?

If you're already our client and coverage is in force, usually the same day. Send us the certificate holder's exact name and address, and the limits and endorsements they're asking for.

Read the request before you send it. Landlords and general contractors routinely ask for limits or additional insured wording your current policy doesn't carry, and finding that out on Thursday afternoon is worse than finding it out on Monday.

I have three employees. What does New York legally require?

For most employers, two things that are statutory rather than optional: workers compensation, and New York disability benefits with Paid Family Leave attached.

These are separate from your general liability and separate from your business owner policy. A BOP does not include them. Businesses tend to discover this during an audit, which is the worst possible moment.

Does the defensive driving course really reduce my premium?

In New York, yes, and the amount is set by the State rather than by your insurer. Completing an approved Point and Insurance Reduction Program course entitles you to a 10% reduction on the liability and collision portions of your auto premium, held for three years. It also removes up to four points from your record.

It doesn't reduce the whole premium, only those portions, and it applies per eligible vehicle. Six hours online, and we're an approved sponsor.

What should I have ready before I call?

Your current declarations page if you have one. It's the summary page at the front of your policy showing coverages, limits and deductibles, and it lets us compare like for like instead of guessing.

For auto: year, make, model, the VIN if handy, and licence details for everyone who drives. For a home: year built, square footage, and any recent roof, electrical or plumbing work. For a business: what you do, where, how many employees, and any certificate requirements someone has sent you.

If you have none of that, call anyway. We've started from less.
